Studying for exams has always been a hurdle every student has to cross. Some students spend hours reading and at the end of the day have nothing to show for it. WHAT IS POST-UTME?
Post-UTME which stands for Post Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination is an examination written by every tertiary institution in Nigeria to screen incoming students. After successfully passing JAMB exams, candidates will still have to write post-UTME of their desired institutions. This can be said to be the most important exam in determining if the candidate will gain admission or not. For instance, in the University of Ibadan, if a candidate successfully passes JAMB and does not pass the institution Post-UTME exams, he/she will not be considered for admission. 


Due to the huge number of students struggling to gain admission to the limited number of tertiary institutions in Nigeria, there is a need for these institutions to conduct their own exams to pick out the best students. Students are however advised to study smartly because this is survival of the fittest.

  1. PRAY 
We can not achieve anything without God. So as a student, it is important to pray and commit whatever you are about to read in the hands of God. Always pray before you study.

  2. CREATE A TIMETABLE 
  Be organized in your studies. Make sure to track your progress and follow your timetable. There are times you wouldn't feel like studying a particular subject, it is normal, but try your possible best to follow your timetable so some subjects you don't learn too often don't suffer from it. 

3. CHOOSE A PERFECT TIME TO STUDY 
It is advisable to study at a perfect time. What is this perfect time? Do not study when you are stressed or tired, you might not be able to fully comprehend what you are learning. This is one of the reasons why students tend to fall asleep whiles studying. The environment also plays a factor, do not study in a noisy environment as you need full concentration The best time is to study when you are relaxed and your environment is devoid of noise. Early morning or late night is advisable.

4. READ YOUR BASIC SUBJECTS SYLLABUS 
It is important you read with a sense of direction. Try as much as possible to red according to your subjects' syllabus. Do not waste your time reading unnecessary things. If you want to study economics, get its syllabus, and focus on it. Do these for your basic subjects. You can refer to JAMB BROCHURE to be sure of your subject combination.

5. SOLVE PAST QUESTIONS 
Past questions are very important. They give you a basic idea of how the Post-UTME of your chosen institution is going to look like. Try as much as possible to get your Institution's up to date Past questions and solve them.  

6. TAKE A NOTE OF TOPICS YOU USUALLY FAIL WHEN SOLVING  PAST QUESTIONS
You have not fully studied when you do not cross-check your failed questions. Try as much as possible to read over questions you failed whiles solving past questions. Do not leave any stone unturned if you want to achieve success. Make use of your textbooks and thoroughly cover all the topics.

7. JOIN A GROUP FOR ASPIRANTS FOR YOUR INSTITUTION 
Get familiar with other aspirants. Thanks to technology and social media, there are a lot of social media groups you can join on WhatsApp and Facebook especially. Most of these groups have been created to help aspirants with information concerning the school. Just search on Facebook and join. Solve questions with other aspirants too so that you will know where your strengths and weaknesses lie.

Whatever institution you are aspiring for, Just make sure to follow the above steps and success is yours. 

Your conduct on the day of the exams also plays a role in your overall success. On the day of the exams, make sure to; 
  • Sleep early the day before your exams so you can wake up early. 
  • Make sure to eat something light
  • Arrive at your exams venue for at least one hour to the stipulated time.
  • Make sure your writing materials including your pencils are well sharpened. Get all you need to so you won't have to waste time looking for who to lend you pencils. 
  • DO NOT FORGET to take along your Post-UTME related documents that will be required at the venue.
